indie music has no cred anymore

as mentioned in an earlier post about food, i’m on the email list for a few types of blogs/newsletters. digital music news happens to be one covering music that i enjoy reading although!!!!! sometimes…posts like this make me go “huh?”. most of the time after going to or even speaking at a conference i find myself asking myself “why are we even discussing topics that are so old…i mean beyond yesterday’s news”. for example, the last panel i was if i didnt get in there for free i would have asked for a refund because one of the main panels was still discussing myspace. how can that still be considered a topic worth discussing. hmmm, maybe it’s a sign that musicians do catch on to things a bit later than everyone else. but hey, i guess later is better than never.

anyway, i completely agree with a few of the comments on this article… especially seth and p455. indie is the mainstream as far as i’m concerned and has everything to do about marketing and globbing onto an idea that used to be cool but now is diluted and lacking any sort of edge. i also agree with this comment “Indie refers to skinny dudes in ironic t-shirts playing hipster music in Williamsburg and Silverlake. It does not mean independent in today’s world. It’s a lifestyle tag, a genre of music. There are plenty of musicians in other genres that are more “independent” than Yeasayer, Waaves and Band of Horses, but they’re not hip so they’re not considered “indie.” Look at Blues, Jazz, Smooth Jazz, New Age, Christian Pop. Mostly independent artists self-releasing or on labels far outside the mainstream, yet they would never be considered “indie” because those who control the blogs, NPR, itunes, music supervision, etc. are hipsters and, with the exception of Jazz, don’t consider any of those genres cool enough to be “indie.”

i love that comment. the key word in it is hipster….these are the “tastemakers” like it or not…they’re not perfect- in many ways they are the new lemmings of the old a&r world. ok i’m done. indiana jones is more indie than what the music industry now calls indie.
